Veracel’s land use

Veracel currently owns 164 575 hectares of land, of which 70 762 ha (43.0%) is used for plantations and 7 504 ha (4.6%) is to be planted. Other forms of land use on Veracel’s properties include:
  • Legal reserve & preservation areas 72 802 ha (44.2%)
  • Estãçao Veracruz Ecological reserve (included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List) 6 069 ha (3.7%)
  • Infrastructure 7 438 ha (4.5%)

An area of 10 006 ha is planted in accordance with Veracel’s tree farming programme. Veracel’s land holdings currently amount to 0.29% of the State of Bahia. Veracel’s plantations cover 0.12% of the state.

Highlights of 2004

  • 411 ha of rainforest restored in 2004
  • Forest certification
    • CERFLOR certification expected mid-2005
    • Preparation for FSC starting after CERFLOR certification.
  • Health and safety on the construction site above Stora Enso Group and Brazilian averages
  • Participation in research programmes in partnership with universities, focusing on issues including:
    • minimising soil compaction;
    • optimal use of fertilisers;
    • monitoring of water quality.
  • Social investments programme
    • Social investment planned for the period of 2004–2005 total BRL 21 million, partly financed by BNDES (The Brazilian Development Bank)
    • Focus areas: education and health.
