There has also been a general improvement regarding environmental awareness among personnel, and this has led to improved performance on environmental issues. Management systems have provided practical tools to help units to focus on the most significant environmental issues locally.

EMAS statements increase stakeholders’ awareness

Public third-party-verified EMAS statements promote accountability, and Stora Enso has strongly emphasised the importance of publishing such statements. These statements are widely distributed to highlight important environmental issues and actions.

Varkaus Mill’s EMAS statement, for example, has been delivered to every household in the community, greatly increasing local residents’ understanding of how environmental issues are managed at the mill.
