Bleaching Methods

ECF and TCF bleaching both in use

Stora Enso does not use elemental chlorine in bleaching processes at any of its 15 chemical pulp mills. The choice of bleaching method is based on the optimisation of quality, production and environmental impacts. Nymölla Mill uses a Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF) process, which is also occasionally used at Kemijärvi Pulp Mill according to demand.

Stora Enso’s other chemical pulp mills use an Elemental Chlorine-Free (ECF) process that will also be used at the new Veracel Pulp Mill, scheduled for startup in summer 2005. ECF bleaching has been recognised as a Best Available Technology (BAT) by the European Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
