Improving the sustainability of pulp sources

A significant new target is that the origin of all the fibre used in all pulp purchased by Stora Enso must be known and suitably documented. In 2004, principles concerning the origin of fibre in purchased pulp, linerboard and fluting were approved. The action plan for the implementation of these principles has started with chemical pulp.

Stora Enso is engaged in discussions with suppliers on how to proceed. The aim is that all pulp supply contracts will include:

  • suppliers’ assurance of compliance with national laws and regulations;
  • suppliers’ commitment to Stora Enso’s Principles of Environmental and Social Responsibility for Wood Procurement and Sustainable Forest Management;
  • information regarding the percentage of pulp production that is ISO 14001 certified, EMAS registered or certified to forest certification with or without chain-of-custody;
  • entitlement for Stora Enso to audit the supplier’s environmental and social performance.

Stora Enso also encourages all chemical pulp suppliers to establish chain-of-custody certification and environmental management systems.
