Forest certification systems

   

The forest certification systems table gives an overview of the various forest certification systems used by Stora Enso’s wood supply organisation.

FOREST CERTIFICATION SYSTEMS
Stora Enso Wood Supply
Stora Enso Wood Supply Baltic FSC FSC chain-of-custody system implemented in Latvia and Lithuania. The Estonian wood procurement organisation is expected to receive FSC chain-of-custody in early 2005.
Stora Enso Wood Supply Continental Europe PEFC
FSC
In Continental Europe 95% of wood deliveries come from Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, France and Poland. In Germany, the wood supply organisation holds PEFC and FSC chain-of-custody certificates. The national wood supply organisations and sawmills in Austria and the Czech republic hold PEFC chain-of-custody certificates. In France the wood supply organisation holds a PEFC chain-of-custody certificate. In Poland, almost all wood comes from FSC-certified forests.
Stora Enso Wood Supply Finland FFCS
PEFC
Stora Enso Wood Supply Finland participates in the Finnish Forest Certification System (FFCS), which is endorsed by PEFC. 95% of forests in Finland are covered by PEFC. The chain-of-custody system covers all fibre sources from the forests to the mills.
Stora Enso Wood Supply Russia FSC FSC certification was granted to the lease area in Pskov Region in Septemer 2003.
Stora Enso Wood Supply Sweden FSC
PEFC
Stora Enso Wood Supply Sweden has been FSC chain-of-custody certified since 1996. In 2004, Stora Enso Wood Supply Sweden received a PEFC chain-of-custody certificate. Stora Enso Wood Supply Sweden also holds FSC and PEFC Group certificates for private forest owners as well as a PEFC group certificate for contractors.

Stora Enso Wood Supply U.S. SFI®
ATFS
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification of Wood Supply U.S., USA, covers wood procurement practices and procedures, and company lands. A Public Audit Summary of the SFI certification findings is available to stakeholders. In December 2004 Stora Enso’s American Tree Farm System (ATFS) Group Organization was certified to the American Forest Foundation Standard.
Stora Enso Port Hawkesbury Limited, Woodlands Unit, Canada SFM
SFI
CSA Z809
Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) certification of Stora Enso Port Hawkesbury Limited Woodlands Unit, Canada was completed in December 2001, meeting both CSA and SFI standards. Re-certification to both CSA Z809 and SFI standards was accomplished in 2004. The CSA standard is applied to company-controlled lands, and the SFI standard is applied to all land management and wood procurement activities. Port Hawkesbury is the first forestry operation in North America to be approved for both CSA and American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) environmental certification.
Plantations
Stora Enso Celbi, Portugal FSC 
PEFC
The Celbi Forest Department has been reviewed for FSC certification, which is expected to be granted in 2005. Celbi is also certified to the Portuguese Forest Certification Standard, which is under consideration for PEFC endorsement.
PEFC – Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes, which endorses the FFCS. SFI and CSA Z809 are also PEFC members. FFCS – The Finnish Forest Certification System. FSC – Forest Stewardship Council. SFI – The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® program of the American Forest & Paper Association. ATFS – American Tree Farm System. SFM – Canadian Standards Association Program for Sustainable Forest Management. CSA Z809 – Canada's National Standard on Sustainable Forest Management.
