Raw materials and services

The main raw materials and supporting services used by Stora Enso include wood, pulp, energy, pigments, fillers and other chemicals, packaging materials, paper machine supplies, maintenance work, IT and transport services. The Group’s purchasing activities are partly centralised and partly decentralised, depending on the nature and volume of the purchases. Most raw materials are obtained from Europe and North America.

Stora Enso’s possibilities to control the sustainability aspects of purchased raw materials and services are in most cases indirect, and the tools used for this purpose concentrate on supply chain management. Various supply chain management tools are used centrally or locally by the Group’s various units (such as Wood Supply Europe, Corporate Purchasing, Energy, Transportation and Logistics, and Pulp Purchasing), according to the nature of the social or environmental impacts concerned.

Stora Enso is currently working to make supply chain management more systematic for all sections of the supply chain and all aspects of sustainability.

Key sustainability aspects Tools
Ensuring that suppliers’ environmental and social performance is in line with Stora Enso’s sustainability principles. In wood procurement, for instance, key aspects include:
  • biodiversity
  • sustainable use of raw materials
  • legality of wood
  • workers' rights
  • impacts on local livelihoods
  • Group policies, principles and guidelines
  • Environmental management systems
  • Traceability systems
  • Forest certification and related chain-of-custody systems
  • Occupational health and safety management systems
  • Quality management systems
  • CSR unit implementation process
  • Environmental and social criteria for purchases
  • Contract requirements
  • COMPASS database
Creation of business opportunities for suppliers.
  • CSR Principles
  • Business Practice Guidelines
  • Supplier satisfaction surveys
  • Joint development projects
Promoting fair business practices.

Transportation

Stora Enso is a major purchaser of transportation services. Transportation by ship is dominant in terms of Stora Enso’s total transportation flows, but rail and road are also significant modes of transport. Transportation services are bought from external service providers, so opportunities for Stora Enso to control sustainability aspects are in most cases indirect, and the related tools concentrate on supply chain management.
