In addition to listings on such indexes, Stora Enso has also been rated by several other members of the SRI community, mainly related to banks or funds.
Stora Enso ranked top in the materials sector of a recent sustainability study conducted by GES Investment Services (previously known as the Caring Company). The materials sector includes firms in the paper and forest products, chemicals, metals and mining, construction materials and building products industries. Europe’s 300 largest companies were rated on their performance on environmental issues, human rights, stakeholder engagement and corporate governance issues.
Nordic Sustainability Index
The Nordic Sustainability Index includes 40 leading companies listed on stock exchanges in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Reykjavik or Stockholm. The criteria for the index have been developed by Oxford Research and the Caring Company.
Ethical Index
The E.Capital Partners’ Ethical Index Management System (EIMS) includes the E. Capital Ethical Index EuroTM and the Ethical Index GlobalTM. These indexes are based on criteria derived from the main UN Declarations of Human Rights, the fundamental ILO protocols and papers issued by scientific and religious institutes (such as the Vatican University) as well as NGOs dealing with human rights and environmental issues. The system excludes companies involved in activities that are considered controversial.
Climate Leadership Index
Innovest’s Climate Leadership Index (CLI) rates firms for their strategic approach and transparency regarding issues related to climate change. Assessors have looked at the 500 most valuable companies in the FT500 Global Index. Stora Enso is one of just two paper and forest products companies to meet their criteria. CLI is part of the Carbon Disclosure Project launched in 2000. Its financial backers include the Carbon Trust, an independent, government funded body that helps UK businesses and the public sector to cut carbon emissions and benefit from low carbon technologies.
