GIS Map System

Major wood procurement areas in Russia have been mapped using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The GIS maps contain information on forest management systems and forest conservation in Russia, including existing conservation areas, areas where conservation measures are planned, and potential old-growth forests where logging moratoriums have been declared.

Levels of information:
1.) Republic or Oblast
2.) Leskhoz - forest management unit
3.) Lesnichestvo - forest management sub-unit
4.) Kvartal - usually areas of 1 x 2 kilometres

Stora Enso personnel involved in wood procurement in Russia have access to the GIS system from their own PCs. Stora Enso's Russian partners have also been provided with copies of the maps to keep them up to date with moratoriums.

The GIS mapping system is an essential tool for the efficient functioning of the wood traceability system.

The maps are produced and updated by FEG - Forest and Environment Group Ltd. in Joensuu, Finland.
