Nature Conservation in Russia

Russian Karelia has a comprehensive network of protected forests, with many of them protected as:

Zapovedniki - Nature Parks
Natsionalnye Parki - National Parks
Pamjatniki Prirody - Natural Monuments
Zakasniki - Restricted Areas (covered by restrictions on hunting etc.)

Conservation programmes cover more than 5% of the Republic's forests.

Further restrictions on the use of forest resources are applied according to a classification of forests into three management groups, I - III. In forests in management group I - which are mainly located along lakes, rivers or roads - clear cutting is largely prohibited. If management group I forests are added to the protected areas, the total proportion of the Republic's forests under protection or such restrictions rises to 12%.

Paanajärvi (Panozersky) National Park

The nearest protected area to the Pääjärvi Harvesting Enterprise's forests is the Paanajärvi National Park, which lies alongside the Finnish-Russian border in north-western Russian Karelia.

Paanajärvi National Park was established in 1992. It is 103 400 hectares in extent. Like most of Russia's national parks, it is administered by the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

In future, this beautiful national park is expected to become the focus of nature-based tourism. At present, however, the area suffers from difficult access, shortages of suitable services and infrastructure, and the lack of any official border-crossings nearby.
