Pääjärvi

Forestry is the most important livelihood in Pääjärvi. About a quarter of the inhabitants of the village are employed by the Harvesting Enterprise.

In 1996, wood purchase moratoriums covering potentially valuable old-growth forests came into force in this area. The future of Pääjärvi Harvesting Enterprise and the whole village were endangered, since more than half of the enterprise's forest resources were included in the moratoriums.

Pääjärvi initiated negotiations with Russian environmental organisations, and a solution was found, which safeguarded nature conservation in the area, while also allowing carefully-planned wood procurement operations to continue.

The Pääjärvi Harvesting Enterprise produces both pulpwood and sawn timber, and it also owns a sawmill. In this part of Karelia, there is a very limited market for pulpwood as a fibre source, so this type of wood is sold to Finland.
